Back in March, Haught reached a new personal-best mark for overhead velocity, clocking in at 64.2 miles per hour. Such throwing speed can help throw out many a would-be base-stealer. It can also help at other positions, considering she is also a utility player. Prior to her summer schedule with Outlaws Premier Grandstrand, she was part of a Canon-Mac middle school team that finished the season with a 15-1 record. Haught mostly played in left field for last month's Alliance Fastpitch Open Nationals, but she had a pair of games where she was behind the dish. Two runners were caught stealing. Haught also delivered at the plate, including in a 14-1 mashing of KR Fastpitch 14U Parenti, where she had seven RBIs. Outlaws Premier Grandstrand finished 6-2 that weekend in Chattanooga.

As a Georgia native, Janay Smith had a quick turnaround from her summer travel schedule with Lady Dukes National 14U Flowers/Lamar to school ball. The said school ball campaign is already underway with 7A Seckinger. Smith places plenty of emphasis on not only her throwing, but also her footwork. Hustle plays, such as reacting quickly to batted balls, are another point of emphasis for Smith, as is her ability to defensively operate at other positions. In addition to playing as a catcher, Smith will also be set up at first and third base defensively. Smith recently clocked a new personal-best exit velocity as a batter at 71 miles per hour.

Jane Tollie is an intriguing prospect who not only plays catcher but also first base. While she had an unfortunate, rocky start to the travel season due to an ankle injury, she turned that setback into a comeback, finishing the grassroots campaign strong with Select Fastpitch 14U Goldman. Two points of emphasis for many a skilled backstop are framing pitches and blocking would-be wild pitches, and this certainly applies to Tollie. In late May, Tollie's Select Fastpitch 14U Goldman team took part in the Top Gun Discovery Showcase. Not only did her team go undefeated over the weekend, but her right arm also played a major role, as three runners were caught stealing.

The summer travel season for Charlotte Espich and her Tampa Mustangs Ohana team concluded by going 5-3 at the Alliance Fastpitch Championships in Indiana. Espich caught five of eight would-be base-stealers, and her arm helped her team finish in the top 10 of a field of more than 100 teams. Espich plays catcher and is a corner infielder, and she finished her spring travel schedule with a .986 fielding percentage. She places a great deal of attention on ensuring she has a quick release time after catching pitched balls in case a throw has to be made to throw out a potential base-stealer.

Raylee Boggs maintains an active athletic schedule. Boggs is currently playing volleyball at 5A Eastern Alamance and will shift her focus to basketball during the winter months. Throughout the summer, she was behind the plate for 46 innings and threw out five would-be base-stealers. Boggs also did not allow any passed balls. The Carolina Elite Alamance standout is also a utility player. She recently finished her middle school career at Woodlawn Middle School. The Eagles team she will be playing for in the spring put together a 21-6 season last year, and those winning ways for Eastern Alamance should continue with Boggs utilizing her strong arm and strong blocking skills.

The pitcher and catcher are the centerpiece of any team's defense. While pitchers understand the situation a team may be in from inning to inning, the catcher sees the entire field from their vantage point.
