2030 Catchers Emerging As Field Generals

The catcher is one of the two parts of a team's defensive battery along with the pitcher. Even though more of the credit for keeping an opposing team's offense in check is bestowed upon who is in the circle, we must remember it is the catcher who signals which pitches to throw.   In addition, catchers also prevent baserunners from stealing bases and prevent potential wild pitches from reaching the backstop. And of course, they are involved in plays at the plate.   Many catchers at this level also play other positions on defense, and also come through at the plate with their bats.   Below, Prep Softball highlights six catchers from the high school graduating class of 2030 who are emerging as field generals.    It was not that long ago that Guiliana Kauten gained valuable experience behind the plate at the All-Ripken Games in early September in Maryland. She had a chance to work behind the plate at a tournament during the summer around Memorial Day. In addition to what she gets accomplished as a catcher, Kauten will also operate defensively at second base as well as being a utility player. She maintains a full athletic plate overall as well, including flag football and competitive cheerleading. Representing the southern part of the state near Washington, D.C., Kauten has worn the Calvert County American League 13-16 SEN Softball All-Stars uniform when she has played travel ball.     Speaking of rising names from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Brooklynn Hager plays up in class with Virginia Fury Platinum 2029 Slaght. In addition to what she gets accomplished as a catcher, Hager also plays third base and in the outfield. Hager recently earned an invite to USA Softball's High Performance Program in Florida in December. When she begins her career at the high school level, it will be with St. Paul VI. A highlight of Hager's summer occurred when she received an invite to Oklahoma City to participate in the USA Softball All-American Games. Hager is a must-watch prospect both behind and at the dish.     One of New Jersey's premier names from the 2030 class, Ella Giambrone is already establishing a broad profile for herself in the Garden State. Not only has Giambrone made a name for herself behind the plate, but she also operates as a utility fielder defensively. She plays for Unity Delhoyo 2030 13U during her travel ball seasons. Giambrone places plenty of emphasis on having quick hands and a potent right arm as a thrower. When her athletic schedule is not taken up primarily by softball, Giambrone also thrives on the basketball court. That quick arm will throw out many a would-be base-stealer. Her club softball career has also included a stint with Rampage 12U Iuliani.     Jocelyn Cabral being a 2030 player who plays up in class on the 16U MA Stars Fastpitch Espinoza team speaks volumes about her skill set. She also plays a variety of positions, including in center field and as a shortstop and utility player. Cabral also keeps a busy athletic schedule. Softball may be her bread and butter sport, but she also thrives at other sports, like basketball, soccer, and flag football. Her summer highlights included receiving an invite to the USA Softball 12U All-American Games in Oklahoma City. The Brennan MS standout also received an invite to the Triple Crown Sports Nationals in South Carolina back in July.     Tessa Schober has also received time playing up in the 16U ranks as a 2030. A skilled righthander, she will find time in the outfield in addition to what she does as a catcher. The SoCal standout plays for the Explosion Kim/Tavera team during her travel seasons. Baserunners must be very cautious when she is behind the dish. Not only can Schober get the more conventional out at second base, but she can also detect when a baserunner has a bit too big of a lead off of first. She also knows how to get her mitt and her body in front of the ball to prevent wild pitches.     During her travel ball seasons, Kyla Paul sports the uniform of Top Gun National 14U SKIM, meaning she is playing up in class. Paul has also put forth plenty of impressive effort with her Doral Academy team, which is one of the premier softball teams in the country, that claimed 6A Florida state championships in 2021 and 2025. In addition to how she helps her teams out as a catcher, Paul will also spend plenty of time on the diamond as an infielder. Paul's quick release, along with her accurate arm and timing, will throw out plenty of baserunners looking to steal an additional bag. Whether it is during the school season or in club softball, Paul has more than proven that she belongs on the same field as the more experienced players around her.
