That drought came to an end this season, with Marley Barfield right in the middle of it all. The sophomore was among the top five players in the nation in runners caught stealing, throwing out 13 baserunners on the season. She also did the little things well by keeping her head on a swivel, pouncing on balls in the dirt, and never making errant throws. She finished the season with a perfect fielding percentage and a caught-stealing percentage of .200, which led all players nationwide.

It has been a season to remember for the Melissa Cardinals. Early last month, the Cardinals set the national high school softball record with 106 home runs. As of this writing, their record is 37-1, and the reigning 5A state champions in Texas are set to defend their title. They have outscored their opponents by a miraculous margin of 479 runs to 39, and have held their opponents to a .138 batting average. Hutton "Lulu" Adrian has been the team's backstop throughout this whole season, and has helped guide the Cardinal hurlers to a 1.34 team ERA. In 57 games played so far in her career, Adrian has not committed a single error over a total of 582 putouts. Her ability to play flawless defense, while also maintaining rapport with her pitchers during a historic run, puts her in an elite category.

Marie Marcum is one of only nine sophomores in the state of Illinois with a perfect fielding percentage as of this writing. After playing in 11 games during her freshman year, Marcum has played in all 32 games for the Plainfield East Bengals this season. She is currently the only player on the Bengals without an error, and is proving to be a versatile defender. While catcher is her primary position, she is also able to play the infield as well. She has an accurate arm, a pop time of 1.7 seconds, and can easily snare a rise ball that slips out of a pitcher's hand. As an infielder, she knows when she can use her backhand to scoop up a grounder, and when she has to charge the ball. She has a high softball IQ, and will be a player to watch in the years to come.

After playing her freshman season in Texas at The Woodlands High School, Carter Cswaykus has found a home at El Segundo in California. Not only did she have a perfect fielding percentage during her sophomore campaign, but she also turned three double plays and was flawless in 151 putouts. She played in all 29 games for the Eagles, and finished as one of only two players on the team without an error. A flexible defender, she plays a solid outfield while also holding down a steady first base. When she is not playing for the Eagles, she is a member of the competitive D1VISION softball program in Louisiana. A reliable fielder is a pitcher's best friend, and Cswaykus fits that bill.

By all accounts, Leyton MacPherson had an impressive freshman season. She only committed two errors in 129 total chances for a .984 fielding percentage and played in nearly every game. This season, however, she has taken things to a new level. Turning a whopping nine double plays in the infield, she has committed only one error in 181 total chances for an even better .994 fielding percentage at the time of this writing. While the focus is on her defense, it doesn't hurt to also point out that she has hit four home runs this season after not going yard at all during her freshman year. She was a vital part of a deep postseason run for the Point Loma Pointers this year.

It is easy to only focus on offense. After all, who doesn't love the long ball? Defense, however, is just as important in the game of softball. If the game is on the line, one muffed throw or misstep on the field can change everything. That is why college coaches often take a close look at an athlete's fielding skills.
