2030 Middle Infielders Making Every Inning Look Easy

The defensive prowess of a prospect who plays either second base or shortstop has been known more often than not to get their teams out of jams when an opponent is threatening to put runs on the scoreboard.   Below, Prep Softball highlights five middle infielders from the high school class of 2030 who make every inning look easy.    Kennedy Hughes previously played for Indiana Magic Gold 2011 Coyle and recently joined TN Mojo 29/30 Murnahan. In addition to being in the middle infield, Hughes also spends a bit of time in the outfield. She gets how to make a judgment on how fast a batted ball is traveling and react accordingly. While a middle infielder, Hughes has no issues covering a great deal of ground, including fielding balls that are hit toward third base. She is a multi-sport athlete who also plays basketball in addition to her growing list of softball achievements.     Mia Marchiano is another prospect who also plays in the outfield in addition to what she gets accomplished in the middle infield. She recently participated in the PGF National Championship with Unity 14U Johnson Vanboxmeer. The stellar defense she played was integral in her team winning a USSSA New Jersey State 14U championship, while playing up in class as a 13U team. Marchiano also understands the art of calling off other fielders when she is confident she will catch a pop fly. The Morris Catholic team she is set to join in 2027 concluded its 2026 season with a 24-11 record.     Brinley Conrad primarily operates defensively as a shortstop, while also being a utility player. She is also a multi-sport athlete who plays basketball in addition to what she gets accomplished softball-wise. Defensively, Conrad is placing emphasis on improving her footwork and transitions. She recently reached 64 mph for her overhand velocity. Those mechanics will help her team convert a large number of 6-4-3 double plays. Playing up in class against 16U competition, as she did at the PGF Nationals in California, is a testament to her status as a rising talent. The middle infield, as well as the outfield, are where Peterson plays defensively. Peterson knows how to get her glove in front of the ball and displays an effective backhand throw. She places plenty of emphasis on throwing velocity, and will practice with and without a ball during defensive drills. Peterson recently concluded her summer season with a .423 average, 21 runs scored, and 24 RBIs.     Hadlee Croy has had a chance to play up in 16U and 18U divisions over the summer with her Iowa United team. Defensively, Croy will play either at shortstop or behind the plate as a catcher. She understands the concept of situational fielding, such as getting lead runners out if she has a chance to do so. Croy also gets that playing shortstop means often being involved in double plays, either of the 4-6-3 or 6-4-3 variety. Croy recently earned a roster spot on Iowa United 16U for the upcoming fall travel ball season.
