All softball teams, at any level of the sport, will have a hard time winning if they are not strong up the middle. The spine, as it's sometimes called, consists of the catcher, pitcher, second baseman, shortstop and center fielder, and all five positions are critical to a team's defensive success.

Middle infielders, in particular, are involved on just about every ball put in play. Whether they're fielding grounders, turning double plays or corralling cutoff throws from the outfield, the middle infield is the anchor of the defense — and these class of 2030 prospects are as good as it gets.

Charlotte Schrand is coming off an outstanding fall season, capped by her performance at the Mid-Tennessee Exposure event in late October. She batted .500 with a 1.125 OPS, showcasing her extra-base power to the opposite field as well as her smooth defense at second base and shortstop. Schrand handles tricky hops without much trouble and applies clean tags on would-be base stealers. Playing for the Tennessee Mojo organization, Schrand's approach is up the middle, with many of her hits splitting the gaps. She also has excellent range in the field, taking charge on pop-ups down the lines in the shallow part of the outfield that are difficult for the corner infielders and outfielders to reach. Schrand has been as consistent as it gets at the plate, hitting .550 with a .667 on-base percentage at the Colorado Sparkler over the summer and drawing seven walks in 27 plate appearances.

In 2024, Wyoming was the only state that no NCAA Division I softball players called home. But Emma Wilson, from the capital of Cheyenne, is on her way to putting the smallest state in the union by population on the map. Wilson is coming off a huge weekend in Florida just before Thanksgiving in which she showed off her power and speed, hitting multiple home runs and also scoring on a squeeze bunt. She makes plays deep in the hole at shortstop look easy, planting her feet and making strong, accurate throws to first. Her raw power, though, is Wilson's best tool. She uses an exaggerated crouch at the plate but has an otherwise quiet stance before using her upper- and lower-body strength to whip her bat through the strike zone and send the ball over the fence. Also a basketball and volleyball player, Wilson is a two-time USA Softball All-American and has participated in the organization's High Performance Program.

When Sophie Dannenbring lifts her leg in the air as soon as the pitcher releases the ball, fans can sense that something special might be coming. Dannenbring's leg kick generates immense power, as it did in her first game back in action from a severe ankle sprain in October, when she hit a line drive that carried over the wall for a go-ahead home run. She helped her team win all eight games at the Stingrays Showcase over the summer, hitting a homer in that tournament as well before going deep again at her final 12U tournament in California. Dannenbring has been to camps at Iowa and South Dakota State in the last few months, and more camps seem likely for her to attend in the near future as she continues to boost her stock.

Garrison Aiken already has a signature moment in her high school softball career. As a seventh grader last spring, Aiken drew a walk-off walk — against one of the best pitchers in her state, South Carolina signee Ansley Bennett — to give her team a win in the state championship series. Aiken did not play much at the varsity level, but she certainly does with her club team, Impact Caymol 14U Premier. She played up at 16U for the PGF Cashionals in October, batting .629 and driving in six runs. Batting from the left side, Aiken has excellent bat control and track-star speed, taking extra bases with no hesitation and legging out stand-up triples. She has great range and a quick release in the infield, and she receives the ball well in order to tag out baserunners trying to steal.

Mia Marchiano has been as consistent as it gets at the plate this fall, highlighted by a 7-for-13 performance at an early November tournament that included a double and two stolen bases. She hits the ball hard and on a line, racking up base hits and taking advantage of poor defensive positioning to stretch her hits for extra bases. Marchiano has a patient approach, accepting her walks when she does not get anything to her liking. Her defense is fundamentally sound, vacuuming up hard-hit grounders at short, and she is also an effective baserunner. Marchiano does not hit for much power, but that tool often develops later, and she has plenty of time to diversify her offensive game. She attended camps at Syracuse and Villanova over the summer.
