Offense might be entertaining for the audience in the stands, but for diehard softball fans, there is nothing better than an old-fashioned pitchers' duel. As the zeroes rack up on the scoreboard, the suspense builds as everyone waits to see who blinks first. The pitchers on this list are used to piling up the zeroes, the whiffs, and bewildered faces from hitters. This spring season gives them the perfect opportunity to break out and make their names known.

Below, Prep Softball highlights five pitchers who we believe are ready to break out in a big way in the circle this spring.

The Little Muskies from John Glenn High School in New Concord, Ohio, have a highly competitive program that is used to making the postseason. If there was any pressure on Kendall Snider's shoulders going into her freshman year, she did not show it. The righthander flourished in the circle with eight wins to lead the team, along with a 1.48 ERA and 182 strikeouts. She only allowed 35 walks all season and held her opponents to a .118 batting average. Perhaps the best news for the Muskies is that she looks just as good, if not better, coming into her sophomore campaign. At a tournament in October, she pitched seven scoreless innings and only allowed four hits. She has an electric rise ball, good movement on her pitches, and ever-growing confidence in her abilities. Last season, she finished the campaign ranked second among all Ohio freshmen in ERA. Expect her to be right near the top in her home state once again this spring.

Last season for the Sunlake Seahawks, the one-two punch of freshman Madison Siders and senior Sydney Walker propelled the team to a 16-10 record and a postseason appearance. The two hurlers both had seven wins in the circle, and Siders led the team with a 1.56 ERA. This time around, with one season already under her belt, Siders is well prepared for a breakout sophomore performance. She has excellent control, having only allowed 33 walks all season, and she doesn't need the strikeout to retire hitters. She keeps the ball in the ballpark, and uses her capable defense to back her up. Additionally, she is used to competing in crunch time. Throughout the past season, Siders was often called upon to pitch in late innings, either to slam the door or to allow her team a chance to come back. The trust given to a freshman to hold down that role speaks volumes about her future playing-career potential.

Sophie Strugar finished ranked second among all freshmen in North Carolina last season with a 1.62 ERA. She also led her team, the Providence Panthers, with six wins in the circle and played a vital role in helping the squad to its best winning percentage in five years. So far this fall, she seems primed to not only be a threat in the circle, but also at the plate. In Clearwater, Fla., earlier this November, she picked up two saves in the circle for her Unity squad, and had a .333 batting average for the weekend. Prior to that, she threw seven scoreless innings at the Texas Bombers Exposure, while having a .500 on-base percentage at the plate. While she herself had four home runs and eight doubles in her freshman season, she only surrendered five long balls for the year. Any player who can average exactly one strikeout per inning in the circle and deliver at the plate like Strugar can is an athlete to watch.

Jenna Sheehan had a magnificent sophomore year in the circle for the South Elgin Storm with a 0.82 ERA, 9-1 record, 87 strikeouts, and minuscule opponent batting average of .163. Along with her senior teammate Anna Kiel, who had a 0.81 ERA of her own, the South Elgin pitching staff only allowed 55 runs all season, and scored 313 runs of their own. This year, Sheehan will be an upperclassman and is poised to be the ace of the team's talented pitching personnel. As of November 12, in fall ball play with her Iowa Premier squad, she had 40 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched and a solid 1.52 ERA. All of her pitches are elite, from her fastball to her screwball, and her pinpoint control often gives hitters fits. Case in point, she only had seven earned runs in her sophomore campaign, and only one home run allowed.

Payton Senge has some serious velocity in her arsenal. The Pennsylvania hurler has reached 63 mph, and is currently dominating her competition in travel ball. At the Stingrays Fall Showcase, she pitched nine innings, picked up nine strikeouts, and allowed zero earned runs. Shortly thereafter, at the Select 64 Showcase, she pitched 12 innings, allowed only seven hits and two earned runs, and struck out 15 batters. She has great movement on her pitches, especially her rise ball, which successfully tails away from hitters. In her freshman season with the Laurel Highlands Mustangs, she had an impressive 1.69 ERA and 88 strikeouts. Considering the stuff she has shown this fall, we expect her number of strikeouts to go up, and her ERA to go down in 2026.
