About Ella

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

When pitching I stay calm no matter the count or situation. Even when down in count or bases loaded, I trust the work I have put into lessons with my coaches, catchers, and stay locked in! Don’t get rattled, and win! When hitting I want to understand the game, hit based on the situation to better my team! Whether it’s to move a runner, bunting, or going opposite field, I want to be that girl!

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was 10 years old. It has helped me overcome adversity and trust the process that hard work pays off. I want to win but I want to be coachable, and help my team go far!

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

FCA, Nightmares, Beta Club

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

Teamwork has been major focus in both academic and extracurricular activities. My parents own a restaurant and I have basically grown up seeing good models or leadership. Watching them delegate tasks, make decisions under pressure, and being able to motivate others.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

When I was ten years old, I was diagnosed with dyslexia. At first, the diagnosis felt like a label that defined what I couldn’t do — reading was slow, spelling felt impossible, and classroom tasks that seemed effortless for others left me frustrated and discouraged. But what began as one of my biggest obstacles eventually became one of my greatest sources of strength.

What type of college are you looking for?

I want to go to a college where I feel like I’m home!

Robbinsville has had one of the winningest high school programs in North Carolina in recent years, and that appears to be the case again, as the Black Knights remain in 1A even following reclassification. Ella Nelms has been a key catalyst for Robbinsville’s continued success this season. A six-foot freshman who also plays in the outfield, Nelms has amassed a 6-0 record in the circle, which has included a pair of complete games. She had yet to allow an earned run this year as of this writing, and the Black Knights had yet to allow any runs this season to date. Nelms only allowed four walks and six hits in 29 innings of work, while also striking out 61 hitters.
