Time flies in the softball world. It feels as if yesterday was the start of the high school season in the 45 of 50 states where softball is a spring sport.

Now, we have arrived at that point once again where state playoffs are either reaching their crescendo or are close to it. Those teams that are still on the softball diamond at this stage of the season have one primary objective: to claim state championship hardware.

More than likely, those teams got superb performances from their arms in the circle to get them to this point, and they will need more of the same in order to carry them to championship glory.

Below, Prep Softball recognizes five youth softball players who are honored as our high school pitchers of the month for May.

The goal of every senior is to finish her high school playing days with an exclamation point. Braelyn Altman has certainly done that for her Taylor Allderdice team as of this writing. A talented veteran standout from Pennsylvania, she ensured her Dragons would prevail as City League champions following a 5-0 victory over Carrick in the title game. Altman hurled a complete game and only allowed two Raiders hits while striking out 17 Carrick batters. As she made things difficult from the circle for the Raiders, Altman also helped her own cause at the plate by scoring a run and delivering a double. She will play her collegiate ball at Washington & Jefferson.

Maddie Milhorn is a two-sport athlete who also competes as an outside hitter in the volleyball realm alongside her softball achievements. Her Skyview team has had another banner season in large part thanks to Milhorn's performances in the circle. The team's lone loss was on March 24—a 3-1 decision against Jesuit. She had her team in a prime spot to claim a 4A state crown as her Storm entered Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) play as a top seed. Milhorn has displayed all season why she is more than worthy of playing college softball at Oregon, as she has gone 17-1 with an ERA of 0.43.

Speaking of Division I college commits out west, Destiny Perez will be entering the collegiate ranks with an impressive resumé. That resumé will include back-to-back state championships with 5A Centennial following a 10-1 victory over La Cueva. The New Mexico State commit tossed a complete game in her final game sporting Hawks colors. In fact, both contests with the Bears resulted in complete games from Perez—the first of which was a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 victory. Perez caps off a 2025 season with Centennial that saw her finish with a 22-0 record. Her 30-0 Hawks became the first team to finish with an unblemished record since La Cueva's 2017 team did so as a 6A team when it went 28-0. Ironically, Perez was matched up against the Bears' Liliana Montoya, who is also a New Mexico State commit.

Riley Sprouse's excellent efforts in the circle this season lifted Ellet to an 18-5 record and a berth in the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) state championship where its first-round foe would be Archbishop Hoban. Prior to that contest, the Orange were looking to prevail in the Akron City Series final against Firestone—a team that Ellet had faced on two occasions before. The Orange defeated the Falcons by a final of 10-0. Entering that contest, Sprouse had posted a record of 15-3 in 98 innings, while fanning 156 opposing batters.

Winning state championships has become a way of life for the 7A Northwest Rankin program. It claimed state glory in 2022-23 as a 6A participant and now have two more state crowns in its trophy case in the 7A realm. Bella Pierce's arm was a major reason why the Cougars are once again the 7A team to beat. She tossed a complete-game shutout to lift Northwest Rankin to a victory over Hernando. Pierce did not allow a walk, gave up six hits and struck out four, as no Tigers baserunner got further than second base. The 5-foot-8 sophomore pitching star concluded her 2025 campaign with a 12-1 record, a 1.57 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 89 innings. Pierce has played at the varsity level since she was an eighth grader, and plays travel ball for Bombers Gold 16U ArkLaTex Chaffin.
