In her first win as a varsity pitcher for Madisonville North Hopkins High School, she racked up 12 strikeouts over six innings. In the following month, she picked up three more strikeouts over two innings for the Maroons. What makes Paxton a stout defender, however, is that she can also play a strong first base, third base, and outfield. She puts in the work behind the scenes with drills on the field and off of it. As a multi-sport athlete who also plays basketball and volleyball, she brings speed and athleticism to every position she plays on the diamond. She is a strong student in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA, and has a bright future in the game.

Sometimes it only takes one tournament to prove your mettle on the defensive side, and for Juliana Chavez, it was at the recent Mother's Day USSSA Tournament that she did so. After catching a wicked line drive at shortstop with a full-out dive, she quickly got back to her feet and flipped the ball to second base for a double play. Later, she turned two again, with a difficult over-the-shoulder grab in shallow center field, followed by a bullet to second base for the second out. She wasn't done, however. She orchestrated a perfect run-down, and applied a quick tag on a runner caught between second and third. Over those three plays, she helped record six outs. She has a strong arm, elite speed, impressive composure, and an ability to complete challenging plays with sheer effort. Coaches often talk of players who can carry a team offensively. She can carry a team defensively.

Arguably the toughest role as a catcher is learning how to block pitches and quickly recover. On more than one occasion this spring, Jordin Hodges has shown her mastery of the skill. Her mechanics are sound, she is able to form a wall with her knees and glove, and in no more than a second, is able to transition to a throwing motion to nab a runner trying to steal. She has the arm strength to accurately throw from her knees, and the quick reflexes needed to handle pitches in the dirt. She is also able to successfully frame pitches below the knees and in the river as strikes with an imperceptible move of her glove. With her abilities, it gives confidence to a pitcher to throw what she wants to throw, and therefore, gives her team the best chance to win.

Ella Bramlett has some of the quickest reflexes you will find this side of the Mississippi. In a recent game, a wild fastball whizzed way over her head and was heading straight for the umpire's mask, until it remarkably found her glove. In the same game, Bramlett superbly blocked a pitch in the dirt using only her glove. She did not have time to create the typical wall with her body, but was able to stop the pitch regardless. She has an incredible pop time, which she has displayed in action multiple times, and already looks like a veteran behind the dish. As most experienced catchers do, she also has a strong arm and instills confidence in her pitchers, as well as in the rest of her team.

Whether she's in the outfield or patrolling the infield at shortstop, Hailey Hendricks simply makes plays. Case in point, last summer, she was responsible for seven of the 12 outs recorded in a game while playing shortstop, and turned two double plays. On one play, a fastball was pulled down the line and had eyes for the right field corner, but Hendricks made a leaping grab for the out. She then fired the ball over to second base to double up the runner. In the outfield, she is just as speedy, and can be relied upon to run down everything from pop flies to deep fly balls. She is an alert fielder, and consistently gives maximum effort. Defense can fire up a squad just as much as offense, and Hendricks has the abilities to do just that.

Having a player on the team who can always be depended on to make the crucial plays does wonders for a ballclub. It energizes the dugout, boosts the confidence of every fielder, and most importantly, helps to win games. The players on this list have provided support for their teams by showing off with their gloves and coming through in the clutch.
