The players highlighted here utilize quickness, precision, and smart decision-making skills to create scoring opportunities and maintain pressure on every pitch, demonstrating that power is not the only way to win games.   Below, Prep Softball highlights several small-ball specialists who change games with their speed and smarts on the bases.    Sophie Giles is a left-handed first baseman and outfielder for Extreme 18U - Rios and a member of the 2027 class. She is a smart and athletic player who consistently puts pressure on opposing defenses. With her ability to execute soft slaps and bunts, she creates opportunities for herself to get on base. She uses her impressive speed to reach base safely and take extra bases. Giles maintains a 4.26 GPA and is attracting recruiting interest from several high-academic Division I programs, including Ivy League schools. As someone who is interested in going the Pre-Med track and possibly studying Biology, she combines her elite athletic talent with outstanding academics, making her a well-rounded prospect.     Isabella Espinoza, a 2026 New Mexico State University commit, is an impressive center fielder. Last summer, she maintained an average of .408 with an OPS of .905, and achieved a remarkable 90% success rate in stolen bases, showcasing her elite speed and smart base-running skills. Espinoza covers significant ground in the outfield, thanks to her quick first step. At the plate, she demonstrates discipline and versatility, as she is capable of slapping for power, executing bunts and soft slaps, and driving the ball. She does all of that while consistently advancing runners and applying pressure on opposing teams' defenses.     Carmen Boxberger is a middle infielder in the class of 2026 and a Marshall University commit. Boxberger is one of the fastest players in her class and a constant offensive threat. She excels at the plate in various ways, including bunting, soft slapping, chopping, hard slapping, and swinging away, which gives defenses little time to react and keeps them guessing on how and where to play her. Her exceptional batting skills helped her lead Top Gun National – Vasquez this summer season, as she boasted a .422 batting average, 21 runs scored, and two triples. She is undoubtedly a versatile spark at the top of the lineup.     Mia Kodachi is a speedy true lefty slapper and drag bunter who can also drive the ball with power when necessary. Playing for Oregon Blaze Boynay 18U, she boasts a 2.75-second home-to-first time. Kodachi has a .500 on-base percentage, putting pressure on defenses whenever she can. With a .395 batting average and exceptional range in the outfield, she makes a significant impact on both offense and defense. Her tireless work ethic further enhances her performance on the field, as she is always willing to put in extra practice outside of her regular training sessions.     Adison Bicknell is an outfielder for the 18U Texas Glory team who is known for her exceptional speed and athleticism. She has committed to play softball for Ole Miss. Bicknell is speedy and one of the most athletic players the program has seen, making her a challenge for defenses when she puts the ball in play, whether that be by laying down a bunt or finding another way to make the defense work. Also a shortstop in high school ball, she brings valuable versatility to her squads. She consistently uses her quickness and instincts to make game-changing plays on both offense and defense.     Reese Breckenridge is a 2028 catcher and middle infielder who plays for the Washington Ladyhawks 16U Fairbairn/Wicker team. She is a speed-driven athlete with great slap and excellent bunt techniques. With her top-level quickness, she consistently pressures defenses by getting on base and creating scoring opportunities for her team. Breckenridge is known for her excellent grades and strong softball IQ. She combines athleticism with discipline, making her a valuable all-around player and a reliable spark in the lineup.     Mason Rethwill is an outfielder and utility player for TN Mojo NW 2026 Nelson. She is a versatile left-handed player who excels thanks to her speed and precision on the field. Her small-ball skills are exceptional, whether she's dropping down a bunt, executing a chop-slap, or driving the ball through the infield. With a remarkable home-to-first time, Rethwill is one of the toughest players in her class to get out. She consistently sets the pace at the top of the batting order, boasting an on-base percentage in the .500s and a batting average in the .400s. She is the dynamic table-setter every lineup wants on its side.
