Five Leaders Who Lifted Their Teams This Summer

Being a leader means something different to every softball player. Some grow into that role over time, developing their skills throughout their tenure with a team. Others jump right in as the voice of the team, break down huddles and are the loudest players on the field.   No matter which kind of leader a player is, taking that mantle is a difficult task, but one that college coaches love to see from an early age.   Below, Prep Softball highlights five players who became the emotional focal points of their summer ball teams this season.    Emily Darby serves as the catcher for her high school and travel ball teams. That means she gets the ball every single play and plays a key role in each game. Her philosophy on leadership goes beyond just making sure to know what pitches are working and which batters struggle with certain pitch mixes. She tries to continually make sure her pitcher and the rest of her team has a good attitude while playing, setting the tone herself by having a short memory and celebrating her team's successes. Emily harps on positivity with herself and wants that to radiate off of her and onto the rest of her team.     Honey Mirabal has already been recognized as <a href="https://prepsoftball.com/2025/02/21/top-2027-prospects-to-watch-in-new-mexico/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a top prospect to watch in the state of New Mexico</a>, thanks to an incredible couple years of play. This summer, she continued that success by making her intense workouts part of her daily routine. Her teammates watch as Honey leads by example, setting the tone for Wicked NM in some of the best tournaments of the summer. Whether it's her versatility around the softball field or incredible bat, Honey has demonstrated the best way to lead for her is to perform to a very high standard day in and day out.     Every time Avery Gries steps into the circle, her team stands ready to compete behind her. Whether it's with Bishop Chatard or Indiana Irish Cromwell 16U this summer, Avery has developed into a reliable arm for her squad. She competes with a fierce drive to make every pitch her best possible effort. Then, once she's done mowing down hitters, she steps into the box herself and possesses a dynamic bat that generates rallies and spurs excitement on the bench. It's that kind of dual-threat ability that Avery uses to help her be a leader for Indiana Irish throughout the team's grueling summer schedule.     It's extremely hard for an underclassman competing up in age a few years to emerge as a leader. But since the time Marley Barfield joined Santa Fe Inferno Humphrey, she's been a staple of the team and an everyday star. Even on her new team that's with other players her age, Marley can step right into a leadership role with her experience playing with older players and help the rest of the team along. As the Inferno's catcher, Marley helped a talented pitching staff weather a challenging summer tournament slate. She's looking to do the same this fall with Inferno's 16U team in seven tournaments through the end of December.     [player_tooltip player_id='117045' first='Tori' last='Detro'] is a shining example of what it means to let your play dictate how teammates think of you. Tori has developed into an incredible, ace-level pitcher with Indiana Magic Gold, ending her summer with a complete-game shutout in which she struck out six batters. Tori has also grown strong enough as a fielder to be trusted at every single position (except for catcher) around the softball diamond. She's an incredible prospect who leads by example on a very successful and talent-packed Magic Gold team.
