Top 2028 Prospects To Watch In Maine

With the high school softball season winding down and finishing up around the country, softball players are now turning their attention toward the summer travel ball slate. For the class of 2028, it's yet another opportunity to showcase their skills to a broader audience of college recruiters. Many of them, especially under-the-radar prospects in states like Maine, have a chance to springboard themselves into the national recruiting conversation.   Below, Prep Softball highlights five of the top softball prospects from Maine's high school graduating class of 2028.    Elyse Broad is the type of player who will always find a way to contribute to each game. She's a 5-foot utility player who can also log quality innings in the circle. For the last couple years, she's played up in competition during her travel ball summers and has competed at a high level with New England Elite. Elyse just finished up a star-studded spring season, batting .453 with 56 RBI. What's most impressive about her stats is her staggering 97.09% contact rate. For someone who has always had aspirations of playing collegiate ball, she's set herself up incredibly well with the intangibles that every coach looks for.     Leah Turnbull is a powerful right-handed pitcher who came into the high school season with incredibly high praise. She was a prospect local media paid close attention to as one of two incoming freshmen arms to help lead the Dirigo rotation. In a difficult conference, she performed well, blowing away batters with a tantalizing pitch mix that many upperclassmen could only hope to possess. She's also been a member of prestigious travel ball programs and is getting ready for a summer with the 16U Central Maine Carnage. Leah has set herself up well for a strong high school career, one that she's hoping will land her in a college rotation in the coming years.     Emma Rice came onto the softball scene this year amidst a large group of talented freshmen for Scarborough who are hoping to turn the Red Storm into a perennial playoff team. The first baseman and center fielder knows how to work pitchers deep into counts and provided a good bat later in the Red Storm's lineup. Though she projects more as an outfielder, Emma has demonstrated incredible athleticism to play all around the diamond and is quick to pick up a new position.     Molly Takatsu is second in a line of talented softball players from her family. Her sister, Taylor, just completed her freshman year with the University of Southern Maine, and Molly is looking to follow in those footsteps. Her head coach Ryan Gero was excited about adding Molly to his team's roster this year, and in limited playing time with the varsity squad, she lived up to expectations. The two-sport athlete, who has already racked up accolades in basketball, batted .407 with a couple RBIs and extra-base hits as well as five stolen bases. She certainly earned the opportunity for an extended look in 2026 and can use a full summer season to develop her skills even further.     Every college coach wants players who can contribute everywhere on the field. Elizabeth Kowalski is exactly that type of player. The Leavitt Area freshman has seen time at every position on the field except pitcher, and has excelled wherever she is on the diamond. Once the softball season is done and the travel ball year wraps up, Elizabeth spends the offseason as a key member of the varsity basketball team. Her athleticism will undoubtedly catapult her up recruiting boards.
