Five Players Who Can Change A Game With Their Speed

In a game where a fraction of a second can be the difference between safe and out, speed has never been more valuable on the softball field. As the 2025 high school season hits its full stride, speedy softball players around the country are turning heads, and not just with their bats and gloves, but also with their sheer quickness on the field.   From slap-hitting outfielders to aggressive base stealers and lockdown defenders, these players are using their elite speed to change games. They're forcing defenses to play tighter and catchers to be on constant alert.   Below, Prep Softball highlights five standout high school softball players who can change a game with their speed.    Aliyah "Speedy" Valdez is both a star on the softball field and the track. Though just a bit over five feet tall, Valdez was selected as the 2024 District 2-6A Defensive Player of the Year for her work in center field. Offensively, she is an extremely tough out, boasting a batting average of .453 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs at the time of this writing. She is committed to the University of Dallas to play Division III softball.     Felicia Zigner is a high-motor, dual-position athlete who continues to raise eyebrows with her dynamic play in both the outfield and behind the plate. A member of the class of 2025 at Shamokin Area High School, Felicia has built a reputation as a gritty, reliable performer with top-tier instincts and quickness. Her academic dedication is equally strong, maintaining a solid 3.7 GPA, while also competing at a high level on the field. Zigner recently posted a career-best performance, going 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored, four RBIs, and a triple.     Camille Mendell is a standout center fielder known for her sharp field awareness, confident communication, and smooth range in the outfield. Offensively, she's a savvy left-handed slapper with excellent bat control and the ability to read defenses in real time. Whether placing the ball with precision or setting the tone at the top of the lineup, Mendell consistently creates offensive opportunities for her team with her speed and smarts. She's a high-IQ player who brings energy to every game.     Eva Ostergard is a dynamic outfielder and the spark at the top of Rockford Auburn's lineup. Known for her elite speed, Ostergard disrupts defenses with her slap hitting and quick first step. She's a game-changer who constantly forces her opponents to adjust. Confident and composed, Ostergard continues to elevate her game with every at-bat.     Emily Brown is a senior slapper from Grass Lake High School and a member of the 2025 graduating class. A standout performer, she earned Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association Division 3 All-State honors, recognizing her speed, precision at the plate, and impact at the top of her team's lineup. She plays travel ball for Ohio Stingrays 07 under Chris Back. Known for her work ethic both on the field and in the classroom, Emily plans to pursue a degree in nursing at Hope College, where she will enroll and play softball later this year.
