Top 2027 Prospects To Watch In Vermont

Vermont is the second-least populous state in the country, and its climate and topography make playing softball outdoors difficult for much of the year. But the Green Mountain State still puts a strong product on the field each year with several players striving to play at the college level.   Below, Prep Softball highlights five of the top Vermont high school prospects in the class of 2027.    Abby Longto helped powerhouse Oxbow win its fourth straight Vermont Division III state championship last spring, putting up a .377/.476/.585 triple slash in 19 games with 30 runs scored and 22 RBI. She banged out five doubles and three triples, walking seven times while striking out just twice. Longto began her high school career with a four-hit outburst against Vergennes, and was 3-for-3 with four RBI in a postseason game against White River Valley. She is a disciplined hitter with opposite-field power and long strides. A multi-sport athlete who also plays basketball, Longto is primarily a catcher but also plays on the left side of the infield.     Brooke Osgood is another rising star in a seemingly endless line of them at Oxbow. She batted .463 as a freshman with a 1.230 OPS, five doubles, three home runs and 30 runs scored in 19 games. Tall and powerfully built, Osgood has a quick bat and can play at either corner infield spot or in the outfield. She had back-to-back multi-hit games in the state semifinal and championship, and hit safely in all but three games for the season. Like Longto, Osgood excels on the basketball court as well as the softball diamond.     The younger sister of Maren McGinn, who now plays at Norwich University, Marah McGinn could not have started her high school career any better. She allowed just two hits and one unearned run in the circle, and also homered and drove in a pair of runs in a blowout win. She hit another homer in a rout of South Burlington in May, helping the Comets earn the top seed in the Vermont Division I playoffs and reach the semifinals. McGinn was named to the Metro Division First Team by the coaches as a utility player.     Addy Longway played a key role in helping Missisquoi Valley win its first state title in 30 years during her freshman season. In the championship game, an extra-innings victory against Mount Anthony, Longway was 3-for-4 with a walk from the leadoff spot with three runs scored, two stolen bases and three RBI. She hit an RBI double in the third inning and another in the sixth before scoring the eventual game-winning run in the eighth. She was named to the Metro Division Second Team and is also a standout on the soccer field, scoring 16 goals as a freshman in 2023.     That Maisy Frydman was only a part-time player last spring speaks to the depth on Oxbow's roster. In just 23 plate appearances, she reached base 16 times with nine hits and seven walks, while striking out just once. Frequently used as a pinch runner, Frydman stole seven bases and scored 24 runs, including four in the state championship game against Bellows Falls. She recently switched travel teams, moving from the Vermont Storm to join her high school teammate, Abby Longto, with 8zero2 (named for the statewide Vermont area code). Frydman scored at least one run in all 14 games in which she appeared during her freshman season.
